Abstract:

Chiefly snapshots documenting the life and career of journalist and activist John Ross. Ross is depicted throughout the collection, as are numerous friends, family members and associates, most unidentified. Most events and locations -- chiefly demonstrations and other political events -- are similarly unidentified, though subjects in California and Mexico likely constitute the bulk of the material. PIC box 1: snapshots and portraits of John Ross; family photographs. PIC box 2: snapshots of various subjects, most identified, many taken in Mexico and pertaining to political activism in that country. PIC box 3: miscellaneous snapshots, most subjects unidentified. PIC box 4: miscellaneous snapshots, most subjects unidentified, including groups of prints with corresponding negatives. AX box 1: portraits; original art; fliers for numerous readings, concerts, political talks and other events, most taking place at Jambalaya in Arcata, many others at various venues in San Francisco. NEG(strip) sleeves: negatives corresponding to prints, mostly those in PIC box 4.

John Ross was born in New York City on March 11, 1938. In 1957, he moved to Mexico where he lived with an indigenous community in Michoacán before relocating to Humboldt County, California and San Francisco. He was imprisoned for resisting the Vietnam War-era draft, and afterwards became a community organizer. Ross was a prolific author of fiction and non-fiction, journalist, poet, arts critic, and performance artist. For many years he was based in Mexico City as a freelance journalist. Ross died in Lake Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, on January 17, 2011.
